I became dedicated solely to the final semester of my event management diploma at Southbank Institute of Technology (who is not associated with this blog in anyway other than educating me), had some medical dramas and things at work changed too. I was right to post about holding off the business of launching Jensen Events until next year, however I have by no means stopped the actual events side of things...

Client: Catherine Macintyre, College of Tourism & Hospitality, Southbank Institute of Technology
Venue: Southbank
Date: five weeks over October, November.
Purpose: To inspire and inform events students.
Duties: Sourcing guest speakers, collaboration with client, managing volunteers, equipment, marketing, documentation, programming, master of ceremonies, registration, budgeting, source catering.

My final assessment for my studies is a series of four conferences and a networking morning for events students and industry guests. Today I just completed the third of these conferences and I do know fair well enough that a pair of sore feet means a good effort indeed. The aim of the COTAH Events Conference Series 2008 is to motivate and inspire event management students at Southbank institute to get moving on their careers straight away, rather than shoving their dreams back into the sock drawer. I quickly rocked up a vision of the program and after quite a few juggling and speaker cancellations, the program came out looking like this:

<div style="text-align: justify; This paid the rent and very much increased my passion for the industry and my job. Plus I was busy organising my birthday bash held just last weekend. It was fantastic; my best birthday ever. The catering was perfect, the venue superb, the staff wonderful and the guests enjoyed themselves. It all just ended too soon and I wish there were more photos taken.

The garage sale has not happened yet either but it is still in my mind of course. I've been strung out with work and now I am three weeks into my final semester in my event studies with major assessment roaring towards me! Lots to do for the next two months at least.

This is why I am putting Jensen Events on hold for a while. It might even cease to exist as I will never be able to run this up to the standard I desire without the skills of another person or two on board. This is not yet a call for a partner or team, but one day down the track there is the possibility when I am ready to kick start JE as an actual business, rather than the start-up or "initiative" that I call it.
Nicolehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09598754460888473768noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8233356343439454403.post-56652822235483453162008-06-01T17:09:00.006+10:002008-10-29T19:01:24.533+10:00Active ABN and Garage Plans
I have an active Australian Business Number. Hurrah!

In addition, I am in the beginning stages of planning a garage sale market for the Brisbane western suburbs. This may or may not include live music, catering, theming, dress ups, competitions, an auction and of course, thrift item sales. If you are interested in assisting in some way or contributing goods for sale, please e-mail me for more details. I am hoping to organise this over the next few months, so that I may hold the event after winter is (God willing!) over in September. So I'm thinking school holidays as well.

I am finishing up all my exams this week, so in place of these I will be hitting the JE books hard from now on. Exciting stuff!
Nicolehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09598754460888473768noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8233356343439454403.post-90489810370634118372008-05-11T22:08:00.003+10:002008-10-29T17:27:18.473+10:00Survey Edited
There was a concern that my recent market research survey was asking for too much personal information, and I have edited it for this reason.

Finding information on location is important on the Internet, because I need to find out if I am reaching my locale in such early stages of setting up the business. I hope I have not upset or annoyed anyone thinking I had alternate motives for this information.

If you have already participated, you do not need to re-complete the survey. And I thank you also!

In other news, I shall be quite busy with my end of semester exams and assignments so I don't expect to be developing Jensen Events a lot until June. Shame, but I am definitely still around to chat and answer any questions you might have.

Nicolehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09598754460888473768noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8233356343439454403.post-30438921687984289152008-05-07T19:01:00.003+10:002008-05-07T23:18:36.624+10:00The Best Event I've Worked On + Setting Boundaries

Q: Hi Nicole, welcome to Askablogr! What's the biggest event you've ever put on? The most satisfying? What kinds of gigs do you say 'no' to? Are you Brisbane-only, or can you take on clients elsewhere?

Asked by Chris DeVore

A: a) The most satisfying event I've had a major role in organising was for International House College (University of Queensland, Brisbane). The college holds an event known as Soiree (which I cannot find the website of right now!) and it is completely run by the students. My role in 2006 was to organise publicity, where with two other students I put the word out to EVERYONE in Brisbane that Soiree was on.

It was my first experience at sponsorship negotiations (successful at gaining free advertising on Brisbane's CityCat ferries!) leading and motivating large groups of tired flag-clothed and body-painted students early in the winter mornings for promotional activities, communicating with embassies and local media bodies and more! Let's just say I missed out most of the actual event because I was so exhausted.

To this day people still congratulate me on my efforts that year. I mean, I had a bucket of beer thrown over me at a rival college because we'd interrupted the cricket for a few minutes to promote Soiree!

b) I refuse events I feel I am not competent in running, of course, also I'd have to refuse events outside Brisbane. The reason for both of these is that I would not be able to deliver an event anywhere near the quality of one run by someone more local or qualified. The last reason I'd turn down an event is if it was being run for unethical purposes; it would take all the money in the world just to get me to go against my own code of ethics!

I hope this answered your questions. Thanks for the warm welcome to Askablogr!

Ask jensenevents a question.

Nicolehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09598754460888473768noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8233356343439454403.post-36455363293193713562008-05-04T17:43:00.007+10:002008-05-04T20:54:01.056+10:00An Interview
Under advice from marketing genius IttyBiz I've answered a few questions that my readers will be wondering.

What’s your game? What do you do?
My game is simple; I provide easy, satisfying event management solutions.

Why do you do it? Do you love it, or do you just have one of those creepy knacks?
For love of course! I've always loved playing the host; even back in my school days I was constantly organising insane house parties. Learnt a lot since then of course, but the same drive is still here. Combine a desire to serve with the drive to succeed beyond expectation and you have my focus on this business.

Who are your customers? What kind of people would need or want what you offer?
I do not organise international spectaculars, or large-scale corporate conference retreats. I specialise in personal events such as your aunt's 40th or a street's garage sale weekend. My clients are people with small budgets and little time for "all the frills." They are Brisbane charities, students, parents, clubs and small businesses with big hearts for who they want to party and work with. This is why they come to me.

What’s your unique selling point? Why should I buy from you instead of the other losers?
Practicality and simplicity. I'm not a high-class event company with crazy demands for deposits every four days because there's a seafood shortage. I understand that my clients are not high-rollers with hours of time to spare because I am still a student myself until the end of this year. I am organising events in my lunch hour, as the sun goes down and as I'm about to fall asleep at night. Also, I barter!

What’s next? What’s the big plan?
The big plan at this stage is to expand. I have big ideas for this so-far small gig.

Fairly sure that's the story. We kept expenditure to an absolute minimum, seeking sponsorship from all avenues possible; venue, catering, stalls, goods, online advertising and more. The only money we spent was on printing, Internet and telephone calls in organisation and marketing.

Our half-literal naked lady, a local burlesque dancer, fell ill in the morning and so we were desperate to find a replacement. None were available, so we had to make do with the data projector showing footage of burlesque and NIA fitness routines instead.

The main attraction then became the auction of strange and wonderful goods people donated. Gorgeous pieces: a collection of exotic tea varieties, classy shoes, mystery knitting yarn and even a signed poster donated by Lola the Vamp [not our burlesque girl] with burlesque costume set. The auction did go well, if not slowed down pretty quickly, and we did raise sufficient funds for the RCH from this.

Looking back, I believe we could have done a better job on the marketing side of things; even one customer said this on her feedback form. There was some confusion as to what the actual event was and what it was for, these two factors I believe having some great impact on the number of attendees.

Link love to:

Tiara Shafiq

Brisneyland.LiveJournal.com

Working Wonders: Royal Children's Hospital Foundation

International House College

Heritage Catering

Scarlet Rose clothing

Lola the Vamp

Nicolehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09598754460888473768noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8233356343439454403.post-53880711051337758002008-04-08T20:10:00.007+10:002008-10-29T17:31:34.308+10:00Event ConneQion: Stalls

These are the stalls which caught my interests the most at the Event ConneQion on April 3rd:

Brisbane Marketing - Brisbane Council marketing initiative to increase the population of Australia's golden capital city and to connect existing businesses.

Brisbane Unique Venues Association - Something I have been trying to organise for the Queensland Museum to be on.

Infosalons - Registration company. Was a fantastic experience and I cannot wait for 2009 already!

First up, it was an outing with my marketing class (very much appreciated, Kerri!) and we had an exam for accounting later that afternoon, so I felt a little limited by time. Turns out though that two hours was more than I needed to get all the information I was looking for.

There were suppliers, services, venues, publications, tourism companies, events companies, motivational and financial speakers, musicians, cooks, mountain climbers, a magician, even an audio visual supplier with a Nintendo Wii set up! All rather exciting, and I must admit I did go with not only professional and academic intentions, but also the hope of chatting to venues about my birthday celebrations later this year. Which I did! Customs House and Hillstone St Lucia were both very lovely to talk with about my requirements and I intend on chasing up with both of them as possibilities.

Over one ticket, two carry bags, twelve business cards and two hours later I was rather excited to get home and sort through the goodies. Even picked up the name of a business stationery company from a photographer. My only regret for the day is that I did not create my own business card before the day, as I was asked for it numerous times.

There were so many suppliers, venues, publications and companies which caught my eye and deserve mention and I shall do so in a second post tomorrow. This entry would seem nothing but link-dropping if I continued! If anything because of this extensive list, I shall be on my way towards starting up a list of resources I can definitely see myself using in the future.

Nicolehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09598754460888473768noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8233356343439454403.post-53421675208697043792008-04-02T10:06:00.003+10:002008-10-29T17:31:44.322+10:00How may I help you?
Welcome to the weblog of Jensen Events, an events and functions management initiative in Brisbane, Australia.

This page will serve as a professional document for my experiences and achievements as I graduate from my studies in November and set out in the industry to create, design, market and coordinate your events.
